Open data: CSV and JSON downloads

The fish planting schedule this site mirrors, as plain files you can open in a spreadsheet or load into code. Each state has a current file (this week and later) and a history file (every record this site has observed, including weeks after the agency's own page moved on). The files are rewritten whenever the site is rebuilt from new data.

Every record is a scheduled period, not a confirmed plant. The agency can change its schedule, and nothing here says a plant happened.

Source and terms

Source: CDFW; terms: see CDFW Conditions of Use. Data: California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Fish Planting Schedule (https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FishPlants/PublicPlantSearch). Schedule is subject to change; treat all plants as scheduled, not confirmed.

CDFW's site-wide Conditions of Use place page content in the public domain with no commercial-use restriction; the related CDFW Fishing Guide dataset on data.ca.gov is explicitly CC-BY. We attribute unconditionally. See docs/LICENSES-AND-ATTRIBUTION.md for the verbatim quotes this is built from.

These files add no license of their own. Use of the data follows the source's terms linked above, and when you share or republish it, credit the agency as the source.

Trout Truck is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by CDFW or any other agency named on this page. See data, license & attribution for every source this site is built from.

California

Last updated 2026-10-22, the day of the last successful check of CDFW's schedule. Current means week of 2026-10-18 and later. Records cover 2025-09-14 to 2026-10-31.

Tennessee

Last updated 2026-10-15, the day of the last successful check of TWRA's schedule. Current means week of 2026-10-18 and later. Records cover 2026-01-01 to 2026-12-31.

Data: Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), trout stocking schedule (https://www.tn.gov/twra/fishing/trout-information-stockings.html). Terms: TWRA terms of use. TWRA's schedule is information posted on TN.gov. The TN.gov Linking Policy lets it be copied when it is presented in a non-misleading way, implies no endorsement by the State, and identifies the agency and its web address, which every page and screen that shows it does.

Trout Truck is independent and is not endorsed by TWRA or the State of Tennessee. These are TWRA's scheduled dates, not confirmed stockings. TWRA: "Any stocking event could be postponed or cancelled due to unforeseen problems such as adverse weather or warm water temperatures." A week-of date is a Sunday, and TWRA says the stocking falls within five days after it.

TWRA gives some dates as a day or a month rather than a week. The period_precision column says which, and the start and end columns hold the whole period.

Data dictionary

Schema version 1. Every file has the same 17 columns, in this order, one record per water, period and species. A column's name and meaning will not change inside version 1; a change that could break a reader would be published as a new version under a new path (data/v1/ today). An empty value means the source gives none, never zero.

state (text)
Two-letter state code: CA or TN.
water_id (text)
This site's stable id for the water, the same id as in snapshot/v2.json. California: cdfw- plus CDFW's StockingWaterID. Never reused.
water_name (text)
The water's display name, as this site shows it. CDFW's spelling is kept unless this site has reviewed and corrected it.
source_water_id (text)
The agency's own key for the water. Empty when the agency has none (Tennessee).
counties (text)
Counties the agency lists for the water. In CSV, several are joined with a semicolon and a space; in JSON, an array.
region (text)
The agency's region code for the water. Empty when unknown.
species (text)
The species as the agency names it.
period_precision (text)
How exact the agency's date is: week, day or month. California is always week.
period_start (date)
Start of the period, YYYY-MM-DD. For a week, a Sunday.
period_end (date)
End of the period, YYYY-MM-DD. For a week, the Saturday that follows; for a day, the same as period_start.
period_label (text)
The period as this site displays it, such as week of 2026-10-18. Show it as given; do not shorten a week to a day.
status (text)
listed: on the agency's schedule as of the last check. removed: was on the schedule and dropped before its period ended (used for states that publish schedules). reported: the agency reports the stocking as done (used for states that publish reports).
count (integer)
Fish count when the agency gives one. Empty when it does not (California never does).
first_observed_at (datetime)
When this site began seeing the record, UTC, YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ.
last_observed_at (datetime)
When this site last saw the record, UTC, YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ.
water_page (url)
The water's page on this site.
source_url (url)
The agency's own link for the water.

File format

The same data, with per-state metadata, is in the snapshot (version 1 is California alone).
